3. Select Security, then tap the Download Data option or search Download Date
4. Enter your email address and tap Request Download.

Instagram will email the complete file of your profile to the email address you provided within 48 hours or it will upto 14 days. Your email will contain your photos, comments, profile information, and other information you may need to access in the future. It's an important step to ensure that your information is protected in case you want to view it, even if you think you'll never need that data again. If you don't do this, your data will be lost forever and no matter how hard you try, you can't get it back.

How to permanently delete Instagram account

6. Click or tap the Delete account button to confirm your decision.

Temporarily delete/deactivate your Instagram account

If you're just looking for a break from Instagram or don't want to make unreasonable decisions, deactivate your Instagram account instead of deleting it. Disabling it will log you out and hide your profile. As for your followers, it's also possible that you deleted your account. However, with this method, even if your profile is temporarily disabled, you can always restore it by simply logging in again. To deactivate your account, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Instagram.com from your browser on any device (you cannot do this from the app).
  2. Log in if prompted to do so.
  3. Click or tap on the profile icon in the upper right-hand corner.
  4. Click or tap Profile, then select Edit Profile.
  5. Scroll down and tap Temporarily disable my account to the right of the Submit button.
  6. You get asked why you are doing this. Select an option from the drop-down menu.
  7. Re-enter your account password.
  8. Click or tap Temporarily Disable Account.
