Samsung unveils world's first sliding display for PC

Samsung has been making foldable smartphones for years and is the undisputed king in this space. However, the company has much bigger plans for foldable devices that include a sliding display in the future. In May 2022, Samsung Display announced his 6.7-inch sliding OLED display that stretches vertically, unlike some expandable display prototypes that stretch horizontally.

Now Samsung Display is announcing the so-called "world's first sliding 17-inch display for his PC". The tablet-like device that Samsung Display CEO JS Choi demonstrated at the Intel Innovation Keynote 2022 features his 13-inch display that can be extended up to 17 inches laterally. This working prototype showed him a single static image.

According to JS Choi, it's specifically designed for computers with a tablet-like form factor, such as the Microsoft Surface Go 3. Specifications such as display panel resolution, aspect ratio and brightness are not yet known. The company does not provide information on durability. Therefore, it is difficult to judge whether the slide display is good or bad.

The fact that Samsung calls it a "sliding" display rather than an extendable screen suggests that the South Korean tech giant wants to make its products stand out.Brands like LG and OPPO 's extendable display was designed for smartphones, while Samsung's display was designed for PCs, which makes sense.

LG's rollable smartphone, which debuted a few years ago, never hit the market after the company had to shut down its smartphone business. OPPO's smartphone with a rotatable display was also never released to the public. We'll have to see if Samsung's latest sliding display hits the market or suffers the same fate as the rest.
